Dani's mother is getting married - again - because that's what she does, and while she and her new husband jet around Europe for six weeks, 17 - year - old Dani is sent to stay with an uncle she didn't know she had in a small community in Cariboo country she didn't know existed. It promises to be the summer from hell. But Dani's uncle turns out to be an okay guy. In fact, Dani really likes him. And she finds romance, too. Suddenly, a summer that had doom written all over it turns into one of the best times of Dani's life. Until the bottom falls out. In a story about relationships and about how bad things happen to good people, Dani discovers that sometimes the only villain is life itself.
Truths I Learned from Sam Kristin Butcher Books
Kristin Butcher’s “Truths I Learned from Sam” is the story of 17-year-old Dani, an only child who finds herself spending six weeks in the wild interior of British Columbia with an unknown relative after her mother remarries (yet again!) and heads to Europe for her honeymoon.Dani is anything but excited about the idea, but quickly discovers that life in Webb’s River isn’t going to be as bad as she initially thought. She discovers that her “Uncle Sam” is oddly cool, and “Micah” – a handsome 19-year-old local boy who has been teaching her to ride, is totally awesome! In actual fact, the summer couldn’t be any better! But life sometimes throws you curve balls, and Dani’s is no exception. When she discovers something about Sam that she has no control over, she fights to understand it. And when she does, she learns that gratitude and attitude are more important than ever. Maybe most important of all.
There is a surprising twist at the end of the novel that ties up a few loose ends, and Dani emerges with a better understanding of Sam, her mother, and especially herself.
One of the things I loved most about this book was the setting. Having spent time in the Chilcotin region of BC (when I was not much older than Dani) I found myself transported back to that ranch at 70-Mile House where I worked for a summer. The author’s description of small interior towns, of sage, horses, and lodgepole pines, were spot on. I could picture Webb’s River, the neighbouring ranch, the horses, and Sam’s trailer perfectly. I could smell the sweetness of the barn, the saddles, the manure and the sun-baked pastures.
At first, I was a little surprised with how quickly Dani took to Webb’s River. There was no sulking or door slamming or other behaviour that you might expect from most teenagers being sent someplace against their will. But Dani isn’t “most teenagers." She is a mature, good-natured, and thoughtful girl, and her positive attitude and responsible nature are completely in keeping with her character.
I am a big fan of character driven stories, and this one rates right up there. I have known a couple of real live “Sams” in my lifetime (and wish the world had more of them). It’s been a long time since I read a good horse story, too!
If you’re looking for a quiet, gentle story about unconditional love that doesn’t beat you over the head with its message, I highly recommend, Truths I Learned from Sam.

Truths I Learned from Sam Kristin Butcher Books Reviews
My favorite Kristin Butcher book so far. Dani is a well-drawn, engaging teenage protagonist. I was pulled into her story and found I couldn't put it down until I discovered how it all played out. Dani's unlikely summer adventure out west, her description of `rodeo life,' and her complicated relationship with her mother created for me an engaging and sympathetic character who stayed with me long after I put the book down.
While her mother is in Europe on yet another honeymoon, city-girl Dani is sent to a small town in the middle of nowhere, Canada to stay with her previously-unknown uncle, Sam. He lives in a trailer with only his horse to talk to. Although she thinks the six-week visit will be torture, Dani enjoys her horse-riding lessons (thanks to cutie cowboy Micah) and gets along well with Sam. Dani discovers things about Sam that worry her and although her mother initially comes across as self-absorbed, she does come through for her daughter. A surprise ending (was I the only one who didn't see it coming?). Compassion, honesty, some humor, and a lot of thoughtful conversations. Thanks to the publisher for the review copy; I loved the story and know my teen readers will as well.
